Message Seven A Man of Prayer
Scripture Reading: John 10:30; Acts 10:38c; John 8:29; 16:32; 1 Pet. 2:23b; Luke 23:46; John 14:30b; Matt. 14:19, 22-23; 6:6
I. The Lord Jesus lived as a man of prayer:
A. Not as a common man praying common prayers to God.
B. Not as a pious man, a so-called godly man, praying to God in a religious way.
C. Not as a God-seeking man praying to God for the divine attainments and obtainments.
D. Not even as merely a Christ-seeker praying desperately to gain Christ in His excellency—Phil. 3:12-14, 8.
E. But a man in the flesh praying to the mysterious God in the divine, mystical realm and a man who is:
1. One with God—John 10:30.
2. Living in the presence of God without ceasing—Acts 10:38c; John 8:29; 16:32.
3. Trusting in God and not in Himself, under any kind of suffering and persecution—1 Pet. 2:23b; Luke 23:46.
4. And in whom Satan, the ruler of the world, had nothing (no ground, no chance, no hope, no possibility in anything)—John 14:30b.
II. As a man of prayer, the Lord trained the disciple to learn from Him in the miracle of feeding five thousand people:
A. His looking up to heaven before He blessed and broke the loaves indicates that He realized the source of blessing was not Him—Matt. 14:19:
1. The sending One, not the sent One, should be the source of blessing; here is a great lesson for us to learn.
2. Regardless of how much we can do, we should realize that we still need the blessing from the source, from our Sender, that we can pass on to the benefited ones.
3. We need the Sender's blessing upon our doing by trusting in Him, not in ourselves.
B. After the miracle of feeding the five thousand, the Lord did not remain in the issue of this miracle with the crowds but went away from them privately to be with the Father on the mountain in prayer:
1. The Lord compelled the disciples to leave him in order that He might have more time to pray privately to the Father—Matt. 14:22-23.
2. He needed to pray privately to His Father who was in the heavens, that He might be one with the Father and have the Father with Him in whatever He did on earth for the establishing of the kingdom of the heavens.
3. When we pray with others, we cannot enjoy the Lord as deeply as when we pray to the Lord privately:
a. The Lord Jesus told us that when we pray, we should shut our door privately and pray secretly to the Father who sees in secret—Matt. 6:6.
b. We have to learn to leave the crowds, our family, our friends, and the saints in the church to go to a higher level on a "high mountain" to be with the Father privately and secretly to have an intimate fellowship with Him.
c. We need to learn these living lessons from the Lord so that we can enter into the God-man living.
