Message Four TheFocus of God'sEconomy-the Mingled Spirit
Scripture Reading: 1 Cor. 6:17; Rom. 8:4, 16; Eph. 1:17; 2:22; 4:23
I. Thefocus of God'seconomy is the mingled spirit, the divine Spirit mingled with the human spirit; whatever Godintends to door accomplish is related to this focus-Eph. 3:9, 5; 1:17; 2:22; 4:23; 5:18; 6:18:
A. Theunion of God andman is a union of thetwo spirits, theSpirit of God and thespirit of man; theunion of these twospirits is thedeepest mystery in the Bible-1Cor. 2:11-14;Eph. 5:32.
B. Theessence of theNew Testament is the two spirits-the divine Spirit andthe human spirit-mingled together as one spirit-1 Cor. 6:17:
1. Thewordjoinedin 1 Corinthians 6:17 refers to thebelievers' organic union with theLord through believing intoHim-John 3:15-16;15:4-5.
2. Thespirit in 1 Corinthians 6:17 is boththe Spirit of the Lordandour spirit-15:45b;2 Cor. 3:17; Rom. 8:16.
3. Theexpression one spirit indicates themingling of theLordastheSpirit with our spirit-1 Cor. 6:17.
4. The implications of 1 Corinthians 6:17 aremarvelous andfar-reaching:
a. Thisverse reveals that we andChrist areone wonderful, livingentity.
b. To be one spirit with theLordimplies that we arein Himandthat He is in us andthat we andHe areone in life-John 14:20; 15:4-5.
C. Themingled spirit is a spirit that is onespirit with God andthat is thesame as God in His life andnature butnot in His Godhead-1 John 5:11; 2 Pet.1:4.
D. Thedivine Spirit andthehuman spirit aremingled asonewithin usso that we can live thelife of a God-man, a life that is God yet man andman yet God- Gal. 2:20; Phil. 1:19-21a.
E. TheGod-man livingis thelivingof thetwospirits, theSpirit of Godandthe spirit of man joinedandmingled together as one-Gal. 2:20; Rom. 8:4.
F. Tobeproper Christians,wemust knowthat theLordJesustoday asthe embodiment of theTriune God is theSpirit indwelling ourspirit andmingled with our spirit as one spirit-2 Cor. 3:17; 1 Cor. 15:45b;6:17.
II. Allourspiritual experiences, such asourfellowship with the Lord, our prayer toHim, and ourliving with Him, are in this mingled spirit-John4:24; 15:4-5; Rom. 1:9; 8:4, 16; Eph. 1:17; 2:22; 4:23; 6:18; Phil. 2:1:
A. Romans 8 speaks of theSpirit of life, thespirit of thebelievers, andthemingled spirit-vv. 2, 9, 11, 15-16:
1. Through theSpirit of life theeternal, only wiseGod, according to the revelation of themystery hidden through theages,dispenses Himself inHis processed andconsummated Spirit intothebelievers tobetheir consummated salvation as their life andeverything-16:25; 8:11; 5:10.
2. Through the regenerated human spirit thebelievers participate inGod's dynamic salvation as their living-8:10, 16.
3. "TheSpirit…with ourspirit" (v. 16)isthemost crucial secret inRomans for God to execute Hisdynamic salvation andfor thebelievers to participate in it.
4. We needto knowthese two spirits in thedivine enlightenment so that, by theSpirit of life mingled with ourregenerated spirit, we mayenter intothe intrinsic significance of thedynamic salvation of GodinChrist, whichis theTriune God processed andconsummated to be oureternal inheritance for our enjoyment-vv. 2, 10, 16; 2 Cor. 13:14; Acts 26:18; Eph. 1:13-14.
B. Thespirit of faith in 2 Corinthians 4:13 is themingled spirit-the HolySpirit mingled with theregenerated human spirit:
1. Faith is in our spirit, whichis mingled with theHoly Spirit-1:24; 5:7.
2. We must exercise thespirit of faith to believe andto speak thethings that wehave experienced of theLord,especially Hisdeath andresurrection-4:13.
3. It isbythemingled spirit asthespirit of faith that theapostles liveda crucified lifeinresurrection forthecarrying outof their ministry-3:8-9;4:1, 10-12; 5:18.
C. To abide in theLordas thetrue vineis to be one spirit with Himandto live in themingled spirit-John 15:1, 4-5; 1 Cor. 6:17:
1. TheChristian lifeisalifeof abiding intheLordasthetrue vine-John15:1, 4-5; 1 John 2:24, 27-28; cf. 4:1.
2. Themutual abiding inJohn 15:4-5is thepractice of beingonespirit with theLord.
D. Ultimately, theBiblerequires only one thing of us-that we walkaccording to themingled spirit-Rom. 8:4:
1. The key to experiencing andenjoying theprocessed andconsummated Triune God through thedivine dispensing is foundin thewonderful Spirit whois inourregenerated spirit andwhohasbecomeonespirit with ourspirit- Phil. 1:19; 1 Cor. 15:45b;6:17.
2. By livinginthemingled spirit, we canexperience Christ aseverything to us-1:2, 9, 24, 30; 2:8, 10; 3:11; 5:7-8; 10:3-4; 11:3; 12:12; 15:20, 45b, 47.
3. Whenwe live in themingled spirit, we spontaneously bear thecross-Rom.8:4; 1 Cor. 6:17; Matt. 16:24.
4. Whether ornotweareunder Satan's authority isnotdetermined bythe things wedo butisdetermined by whether weareinthespirit orinthe flesh;if we remain inthemingled spirit, we willbe kept fromSatan, and theevil one will have no way to touch us-Gal. 5:16-17;1 John 5:4, 18-21.
5. To live in thespirit is to letChrist fill andsaturate usuntil He permeates our wholebeingandis thereby expressed through us-Eph. 3:16-20.
E. By living,walking, andhaving ourbeingin themingled spirit, we will be saved in life to theextent that God andwe, we andGod, willbe completely mingled as one, having one life andone living-Gal. 2:20; Phil. 1:19-21a.
F. If we enter experientially intothedepths of thetruthconcerning the mingled spirit, ourinner beingwillberadically changed, andourlife,ministry, and service in thechurch will be affected in a revolutionary way-1Cor. 6:17; Rom.8:4.
